ASU launches green guide

In recognition of this growing threat, the ASU has developed a green guide for its office-based members, in a bid to reduce members’ impact on the environment and promote sustainable work practices.

Launched by Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet, and Australian Conservation Foundation Executive Director, Don Henry, the ASU Clean & Green Guide offers workers tips on reducing waste, as well as tools to implement office-wide waste-management policies.

The ASU has also developed an extended Clean & Green CD guide containing detailed step-by-step instructions on implementing the policies and procedures outlined in the four-page guide.

ASU Branch Secretary, Ingrid Stitt, said the guide was developed in recognition of the increasing importance of sustainability in members’ lives.

“A lot of our members have indicated they are concerned about climate change and the impact in their day-to-day life but were not sure where to start,” Ms Stitt said.

“Our guides don’t ask people to radically alter their lives, or change jobs, but highlight how by changing a few bad habits and establishing protocols in the workplace, they can limit their impact on the environment.”

Ms Stitt said while she believed it was the responsibility of both companies and employees to adopt sustainable work practices, the guide and the extended guide ensured, at the very least, the workers were meeting their end of the bargain.

“This is about us saying that we think climate change is a serious concern, and here’s how we intend to do our bit in the industries our members work in.”
